Samsung Galaxy A8, A8+ (2018) with Infinity display launched, may sell in January with price of $599

first_imgSamsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) have been launched. This is a global launch, with the phones going on sale in South Korea, which is Samsung’s home market, first. But soon the company is expected to bring them to other markets, including India, because the new A8 and the A8+ are very important phones for Samsung. These are the phones with which the company hopes to take on the likes of the Nokia 8 and the OnePlus 5T in the high-end segment.  Update: Samsung has not yet announced the date of availability or prices of the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+ but chances are that the phone is going on sale from January. This is something that Russian publications are also confirming. They are writing that the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+ will go on sale in Russia from January 1. Interestingly they have the prices of the two phones. Technology journalist from Russia Eldar Murtazin tweeted on Tuesday that the Galaxy A8 will sell at a price of 34990 Rubles in Russia whereas the price of the Galaxy A8+ will be 37,990 Rubles. In other words, when translated to dollars, chances are that the Galaxy A8 may cost $599 whereas the Galaxy A8+ may sport a price tag of $649. In India, the prices of these two phones could be between Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000.   Although, the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+ (2018) will only go on sale from January next year. Also their prices will be announced only when they go on sale. It is expected that Samsung will showcase the A8 and the A8+ at CES in Las Vegas in the first half of January. advertisementThe Galaxy A8 and the A8+ are the first A series phones by Samsung that come with dual front cameras, coupled with Live Focus feature. This should appeal to selfie lovers because the dual-camera system may allow them to not only click selfie photos with blurred background but may also allow them to experiment with the front camera photography. Apart from the dual selfie cameras, another striking feature of both the A8 and A8+ (2018) is their Infinity display. This is a feature the phones have borrowed from the high-end Galaxy S8 and Note 8 that were launched in 2017. In a way, with the new Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+, Samsung is making its Infinity Display feature more mainstream.”With the release of the Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018), we’re bringing our customers’ favorite features from our flagship smartphones, such as the Infinity Display and our first Dual Front Camera with Live Focus, to our Galaxy A series, which is already known for its premium design,” says Junho Park, a Samsung vice president.Samsung also says that the Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) have a “stunning ergonomic design that draws on Samsung’s flagship design heritage and experience”. Although this is a hyperbolic praise, as the marketing lines from brands often are, there is no denying that the new Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+ look stunning, largely because they follow the design of the gorgeous Galaxy S8.  The smartphones have been launched in four colors: black, orchid grey, gold and blue.Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8 Plus specificationsAs far as the specifications are concerned, the two smartphones don’t differ a lot. The significant differences between the two are in their displays, RAM, storage and battery set up. The Galaxy A8 is a little smaller in size when compared to the Plus variant. Obvious, no? The A8 comes with a 5.6-inchFHD+ Super AMOLED display with 1080×2220 pixel resolution, while the A8+ is a little bigger and comes with 6.0-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with the same resolution. The Infinity Display on both the smartphones comes with an immersive 18.5:9 display ratio. “The large screen is supported with ergonomic curved glass on the back and front,” notes Samsung. Now although, the displays in the A8 and the A8+ seem to be similar to the display in the Galaxy S8, there are differences. The biggest difference is that only the glass layer on top of the A series phones is curved. The display is flat, which is unlike the Galaxy S8 that has a curved display. Then there is the resolution. The Galaxy S8 has a QHD display resolution whereas the new Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8 Plus come with a variant of the 1080P screen.  Also Read: Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ review: Cutting the edge and doing it in styleAs far as the cameras are concerned, both the Galaxy A8 and A8+ come with the same setup. The key camera feature of the smartphones is its dual front camera setup. Both the A8 and A8+ come with a 16MP + 8MP F1.9 dual front cameras. The users can switch between the two cameras as and when required. The dual front camera of the A8 and A8+ will allow users to capture selfies with blurred background. The dual front cameras also come with advanced Live Focus feature, which will allow users to easily adjust the bokeh effect before or after they click a picture. The front cameras, according to Samsung, will also help consumers click better photos in low light as well as allow them add stickers to the selfies. The phones also come with video digital image stabilisation (VDis) technology which is paired with an added hyperlapse feature which will allow users to create time-lapse videos.advertisementOn the hardware and software front, both the smartphones don’t differ much. Both the Galaxy A8 and A8+ are powered by Octa Core (2.2GHz Dual + 1.6GHz Hexa) processor. On the storage front, both the A8 and A8+ comes in two variant — 32GB and 64GB which is coupled with 4GB RAM each. The storage is expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. The Galaxy A8 is backed by a 3,000mAh battery, while the Plus variant packs a 3,500mAh battery. Both the Galaxy A8 and A8+ comes with Android 7.1.1, Fast Charging and USB Type-C support.Galaxy A8 and A8+ includes IP68 water and dust resistance, which means that the two smartphones are capable of surviving rain rain, sand and dust. The smartphones also come with Always On Display so that users will get information at a glance without unlocking their phone. In a way, the new updates to the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy A8+ make them formidable competitors to the phones like the Nokia 8 and the OnePlus 5T, which are beating Samsung in the price point of around Rs 30,000. While Samsung has the top-end phones like the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy S8, which are the market leaders, it is under Rs 40,000 where it is struggling in the markets like India. And that is affecting Samsung’s overall market share. Now it seems that Samsung has decided to overhaul its A series phones to take on the competition and that the A8 and the A8+ are first in the series to come under this new strategy.last_img read more
