Email Scam Targeting Millions of Netflix Customers

first_img A new scam has been hitting millions of Netflix subscribers. It threatens to suspend accounts, stating that the Netflix team was “unable to validate your billing information” for users’ subscriptions. It also states that the team would “love to have you back,” and that all you need do is update your information. While that sounds legit, it’s a phishing attempt that’s gained some decent spread.“Unfortunately, scams are common on the internet and target popular brands such as Netflix and other companies with large customer bases to lure users into giving out personal information,” Netflix told ABC News in a statement.Netflix states that it will never ask for personal information over email and that you should always log in directly through the site if you’re worried.AdChoices广告“Scammers can make their fake emails and bogus websites look pretty convincing, so it’s always a good idea to check carefully that the email comes from the actual company domain and not a scammer,” security firm Mailguard said in a company blog. Ostensibly the attack targets upwards of 100 million people, making it one of the more pervasive scamming attempts.“This works like a mail-merge; the body of the email is generic, but the sender field is designed to show the name of the intended victim, which personalizes the scam making it more convincing,” Mailguard wrote. “Once the fake website has collected all the sensitive data the scammers want, the victim is shown a reassuring ‘reactivation’ screen.”Cyber-attacks, as we’ve covered before, are on the rise. And while this might not be quite as head-turning as, say, bringing a section of the internet down for a few hours, it is a reminder that we are, unfortunately, always under attack. Our modern world necessitates a greater level of vigilance, and most importantly, cooperation from businesses and governments to help standardize security best practices. Until then, we’re on our own.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
