Gov’t Losing Thousands at Buutuo Port

first_imgThe inaccessibility to Buutuo Port of Entry due to bad roads and damage to the ferry are causing the Liberian government huge losses in revenue, this paper has learned. The Deputy Revenue Collector at Buutuo Port of Entry, Mr. Peter Miamen, told the Daily Observer that in the absence of good roads, Buutuo Port of Entry will never gain its prewar status. He said many of the sub-ports remain porous owing to a lack of manpower, thus, leaving the entire area open to smuggling.“The Ganta Port of Entry has become a lucrative area of revenue collection. It used to be a sub-port to Buutuo Port of Entry prior to the war,” Miamen explained.“Presently, there are no customs officers at the port [Buutuo Port of Entry] and the ferry used for bringing goods into Liberia has been down since 2002,” our correspondent was told.Mr. Miamen said efforts by the Ivorian Government some weeks ago to pull the damage ferry from the river by caterpillar became impossible due to the fact that most parts of the ferry are on the Liberian side of the border. Our Nimba Correspondent stated that Behwalay, one of the sub-ports, has been vulnerable since the 15-year-old civil war came to an end.Behwalay is situated around one of the Ivorian commercial towns known as Toulepleu. Aside from that, there are many other crossing points that were under the sub-collector that used to be in Behwalay.Buutuo is strategically located because it links to many Ivorian commercial towns. But the road leading to Buutuo from Bahn is yet to be rehabilitated.“We are facing the challenge presented by this long distance without a vehicle; and the only motorbike assigned to the port is down,” he concluded.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
