A FEW SWALLOWS JUST MIGHT MAKE A DONEGAL SUMMER!

first_imgA brood of swallowsMany say that they’re the first sign of summer! If that’s the case then the arrival of Donegal’s first swallows in recent days may mean we’re in for some better weather. We have been contacted by readers in Letterkenny, Carrigart and Buncrana who say they have spotted the tiny birds in recent days. The birds, who traveled from North Africa, will remain here until October at the latest before making their return back to warmer climates again. Both Swallows and Sand Martins can be spotted in barns, garages and on the gables of houses over the summer months. They return to the same area where they were born each summer although the vast majority of them do not make the gruelling journey to Africa or back again. They may make a little bit of a mess but their incredible journey to Ireland to breed each year is reason enough to allow them to be a bit of a nuisance for a few weeks.
